Tip 187: Using QueryBuilder

By

Beginning with Outlook 2002, there is an additional option for the filtering dialog – it’s called QueryBuilder. To access it you just need to add the QueryBuilder key to the registry, nothing more.

Outlook2002

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\QueryBuilder

Outlook 2003

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\QueryBuilder

Outlook 2007

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\QueryBuilder

Outlook 2010

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\QueryBuilder

Now you can create an AND/OR query using the Filter dialog in Search Folders, Define Views, Automatic Formatting, or Advanced Find.

Do It For Me

If you don’t want to edit the registry yourself, we have ready to use reg files for all supported versions available at Do It For Me: Query Builder.

To use, download the reg file for your version of Outlook then double click to run it. OK the dialogs to add it to your registry.

This looks like what I’m looking for. I added the key to the registry. It looks like a ‘folder’, right? Then I’m left with a REG_SZ entry with (default) as the ‘name’, and (value not set) as the ‘data’. What am I meant to do next?!

    Yes, that is correct.

    Diane,
    You didn’t answer his question.

Sorry. That’s all he needs to do – just create a the key and close the reg editor. If memory serves me, you don’t even need to restart outlook for this one. (But if the filter window is open, you will need to reopen it.)

I’m adding ready to use reg files as i come across pages with reg hacks – will create and upload them next. Actually, since I have the reg files for all supported versions on our sister-site already, I won’t add the reg’s here. (It makes it easier when the time comes to add a new version.)

Sorry – I should have said, that after I’d done that and posted the comment asking what to do next, I realised that there was nothing else that needed doing. I wasn’t expecting it to just ‘work’!
Thanks, Diane, for the help. And thanks, ‘Other Paul’ for keeping us on our toes!

Don’t worry about it. It happens a lot. :)
