Tip 734: Outlook 2003 buttons group with Word

I was pretty sure I mentioned this bug previously but can’t find it in the archives, so either I’m bad at searching or didn’t tip it yet…

Today’s ‘Outlook 2003 on Windows7’ bug is task bar grouping – when you use Word as the editor, the email buttons group with Word, not Outlook. I don’t expect this to be fixed, although it has been a problem off and on over the years (an update broke it, another one fixed it, then it broke again…) so I won’t be shocked if a patch is released to fix it…. right after everyone gets used to email grouping with Word.

The other Outlook 2003/Windows 7 bugs I’ve written about are a problem opening zips attached to email and the missing Office Assistant.

No, it’s not fully compatible, but the issues are minor. You should not use compatibility mode – that creates more problems than it solves.

To solve the grouping of taskbar buttons issue: In outlook go to Help/Detect and Repair, tick the box to keep your shortcuts and leave the process to run. Sorts it out every time!

It’s not working here – email groups with Word even after a repair (when Word is set as the email editor). The only way to group mail with Outlook is by disabling Word as the editor.
