Tip 687: Try Office 2010 “C2R”

Would you like to try Office 2010 but don’t want to screw up your current installation of Office? No problem, the “Click to Run” version (aka C2R) is virtualized and can run side-by-side with your current installation.

There are some limitations. While Outlook 2010 will re-use most of the current version’s settings including PST file, it will not use your installed add-ins. You can switch between either version at any time but cannot use both at the same time. External programs will not see C2R Outlook, so for example, mailto’s will not use Outlook 2010 because it is not registered as a default email client and it cannot be set as the default client.

While the limitations would be annoying for regular use, it’s workable for people who want to try Outlook or need to support Outlook 2010 but aren’t ready to move to it for daily use.
