Tip 18: Using AutoResolution

Many people are in the habit of clicking the To: button on a message form to pick names when they send messages, instead of taking advantage of Outlook’s autoresolution capabilities.

Enter part of a name in the To, CC, or BCC fields and Outlook resolves the name to an address in your address book. When Outlook finds an exact match, it resolves the name and underlines it with a solid line. If Outlook finds more than one match, the name is underlined with a red squiggly line and you need to right click on it to select the person you are sending to. In the future, Outlook will resolve to the selected name first, underlining it with a green dotted line. You can select a different address by right clicking on the entry and selecting one of the other matches Outlook found.
