The News command was removed from the toolbar in Outlook 2003 and later but you can customize the toolbars to add it back. Personally, I wouldn't bother - Outlook doesn't include an NNTP client, its command calls up Outlook Express or Vista's Mail in news-only mode and a shortcut to your news client on the Quick Launch bar is just as easy. If you add the /newsonly switch to the command line, it will open without the Mail module.

There are two reasons why the Go News command is missing from Outlook.

The first affects Vista and Windows XP and is caused by the default news client setting in Internet Options and usually happens after you add the News command to the toolbar and open OE. It disappears from the toolbar and when you go back to View, Toolbars, Customize looking for it, its gone. When this happens, you need to go to the Programs tab in Control Panel, Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch it, click the "Don't ask me again" box and then click the No button.

If you use Windows 7 and don't see the News command in the customize dialog, this is because there is no news client installed that Outlook recognizes. Win7 does not include a mail and news client and Outlook does not recognize Windows Live Mail or other clients, only OE and Vista's Mail, neither of which come with Win7. My preferred solution is to make a shortcut to your preferred client and put it on the Quick Launch or pin it to Windows Task bar.

Note: if you really want to use Mail in Win7, there is a hack to enable Mail. (I use Windows Live Mail and haven't tried this hack so I don't know if it will allow 'Go, News' to work.)

Tip: Windows Live Mail is pre-configured for the "Microsoft Community" news server. If you use a different news client, the server name for the Microsoft newsgroups is msnews.microsoft.com
