A couple of Outlook users complained this week that Outlook doesn't support the encryption methods their mail server does. They wanted to know how to make Outlook send secure email.
An encrypted connection to your mail server is not available. Click next to attempt using an unencrypted connection.
Easy: set the account up manually.
When you use autodiscover and let Outlook set up the account, it picks up the server information from the DNS records. If the records are missing or incomplete, Outlook falls back to an unencrypted connection.
In this example, I receive the message because the DNS records do not contain the secure server configuration. (I need to edit the account manually regardless because Outlook sets the account up as an IMAP, which is not supported by my account.)
When this happens you have two options: click Next and let Outlook complete the configuration then choose Configure the account manually and edit the account to enable SSL or TLS.
Or click Back and choose Manually configure server settings or additional server types and set up your account.
After selecting the Manually configure option, click Next.
- Enter (or verify) the server names and login information
- Click the More Settings button
- Click on the Advanced tab to configure the encryption settings and correct port numbers
- Click the Outgoing Server tab
- Enable the correct POP and SMTP authentication method
To enable encryption after the account is configured, open Account Settings (File menu in Outlook 2010/2013 or Tools in Outlook 2007/2003). Double click on the email account then click More Settings.
