Tip 590: Add Contacts to the Autocomplete cache

Do you want to populate your autocomplete list (nickname cache) with the email addresses in your contacts folder?

You can add them to the auto-complete cache using one of several methods.

To add all contacts to the list, open the contacts folder and select all, go to Actions, Create, New message to contact, then close the message once the addresses resolve (are underlined). This method will attempt to add all contacts, even those without email addresses. To avoid the resulting error dialog, create a filtered view that contains only contacts with email addresses. See Use Custom view data for help with this method.

You can open a new message, click the To button and select all addresses. This method avoids the ‘no email address’ dialog you’ll get if contacts don’t have a valid email address but adds fax numbers to the list. (They ARE valid electronic addresses.)

Remember, you don’t need to send the message to add the addresses to the auto-complete cache. At most, you would need to save the message to the Drafts folder before closing the message.
