Outlook defaults to using Full Name (email@address) format as the email display name. Some users prefer to use a different format, often removing the email address for security reasons. We even have a macro that makes it easy to change the email display name.
The email Display As field in Contacts:
Is used as the email Display Name field in the address book:
But a recent upgrade to the Outlook Hotmail Connector put an end to changing the email display name on contacts stored in the Hotmail account:
In Outlook 2010 I cannot get the Email Display As field to change permanently. I have tried changing it while in the Card view, in the List view and from Properties in an email TO field. It appears to make the change when I Save and Close. But when I later go into Contacts or my Address Book in Outlook it has been overridden with the Full Name and Email address in parentheses. How can I force the Display As values to be saved permanently? This is so frustrating, makes me sorry I upgraded from Office 2007.
Don't blame Outlook 2010 and don't revert back to Outlook 2007 expecting to get the old behavior back. It won't make a difference.
The change to Full Name (email@address) format was added in Outlook Hotmail Connector 14.1, as the result of a request from the Hotmail team. Hotmail's category feature expects the Display As field to be DisplayName (EmailAddress) so the connector updates it when you sync.
