Tip 1115: Contact's Phone number formatting

I'm using MagicJack and it requires that all numbers have an area code, but no +1. I figured out how to require the area code for my home location, but is there a way to eliminate the +1 on all area codes other than setting up area code rule for each area code?

Sure.

The default setting is no country code is added, so when you type 2025551212 into the number field, the number is formatted as (202) 555-1212 when you tab out of the phone number field, unless you click the Phone number button to open the Check Numbers dialog.

If you don't click on the Phone number button (the field label – Business, Home, etc) to use the Check Number dialog, the number should remain formatted as (202) 555-1212.

Check Numbers dialog

When the country code is added to the number immediately after tabbing out of the number field and you didn't click the phone number button, you need to check the Dialing Options.

How to check Dialing Options

Open a Contact, go to More, then click on Call.

Expand More, click on Call

The New Call dialog opens. Click on the Dialing Options button.
Click Dialog Options button

Is the check box enabled to Automatically add country/region code to local phone numbers? When this option is enabled, the country code is added to the phone number when you tab out of the field. You'll want it unchecked if you don't want the country code added to the phone number.
