Tip 1096: Hide Events on your Outlook Calendar

This request came from an Outlook user:

Ideally, I would like to be able to right click an event and have an option to "hide this event" from my view. I haven't been able to figure out a way to create a custom view that hides the events I don't want to see without hiding the ones I do need to see.

While Outlook doesn't have a right-click > Hide command, you can get nearly the same effect with custom views and categories. Plus, it works in all versions of Outlook.

Step 1: Create a category called Hide.

Step 2: Create a custom view that hides the category called Hide.

To create a custom view in Outlook 2010 or 2013:

  1. Switch to the View tab.
  2. Choose Change View, Manage views.
  3. Select Copy to copy the current view or click New.
  4. Type a new name for the view.
  5. Click Modify, then Filter.
  6. On the Advanced tab, type Categories in the Field box, choose doesn't contain as the Condition and type Hide as the Value.

Hide appointments

Apply the view to your calendar then right-click on an appointment or event and choose Categorize > Hide to add the category to an event.
