Tip 968: Display New Message Alert using Rules

A user asked:

I'm using a rule to move messages to a particular folder. When the rule moves messages, I can't see the the popup (Email notifier) which normally comes on the right side of the desktop when I get new mail. How can I see the notifier for messages I move?

Outlook's desktop alert

Those notifiers are called Desktop Alerts or "blue toast" and you can display them using the same rule.

Choose the action to "display a Desktop Alert". You can also choose to play a sound when a message meets the conditions in the rule. (Customized ringtones for email!)

Use the display an alert action in a rule

The New Item Alert window in the action above the Desktop Alert will display a dialog on the screen until you close it. While this is great for very important messages you don't want to miss, it can be annoying if its used for all but the most important messages.
