Accessing Outlook's Mail Profile Dialog

Opening the Mail Profile applet is the first step to creating additional profiles or editing your current profile.

When Outlook is the default email client you can right-click on the Outlook shortcut pinned near the top of the Start menu in Windows XP or Vista and choose Properties. If you don't have Outlook set as default email client or have do not have Windows configured to show the Outlook shortcut there, you'll need to look in the Control Panel.

 

 

When you're told to look in "Control panel, Mail" the person assumes you are using the Classic view of the Control panel or know to switch to it:

While Classic view is generally easier to find things because you can see all of the available Control panel applets, if you are using the grouped view, look under the User Accounts group for the Mail applet.

 

When the Mail applet is open, you'll see the following dialog. Choose Email Accounts to look at the account configuration for your profile, or the default profile if you have more than one profile.  The Data file button is used to change the Personal File (*.pst) that you use with your account or to add additional pst files. Use Show profiles to create additional profiles, or to manage multiple profiles.

 

When you choose Show profiles, you'll see this dialog. From here you can add, edit or delete profiles. If you use multiple profiles you can configure Outlook to let you choose which profile you want loaded.

If you suspect your profile is corrupt or damaged or are told to make a new profile to see if your problems is fixed, do not Copy a profile. This will copy the problems to the new profile. Use Add and create a brand new profile. If you just need to make a second copy of a profile for some reason, you can use Copy.
