Learning Microsoft Outlook One Tip At A Time

Icons used in the Rules and Alerts dialog

A common question we are asked is "What does the hammer and wrench in the rules wizard dialog mean?"

Each type of action used in rules uses an icon to identify the type action that is configured for the rule and the hammer and wrench icon are displayed for actions that don't have their own icon.

Rules Wizard icons

The actions are (in the order shown in the Rules Wizard):

Display Alert iconDisplay the New Item Alert window
play soundPlay a sound
Move to folder iconMove to a specific folder
copy to folder iconCopy to a specific folder
low importance iconMark the importance (High (high importance), Normal (no icon), or Low (low importance icon) icon)
flag for follow upFlag message for Follow Up
DeleteDelete the message (not the 'permanently delete' action)
Hammer and WrenchAll other actions (the hammer and wrench icon)
